
Most tourists arrive in Jamaica through Montego Bay, which is home of the North Shore airport and the busiest cruise harbor of the island.
Jamaica's second largest city, Montego Bay is located on the North West corner of the island. Montego Bay is Jamaica's favourite tourist destination. There can be spent excellent Caribbean all-inclusive vacations in luxury hotels settled in beach resorts. Tourism got its start here in 1924. Throughout the year, Montego Bay remains a bustling community.
Montego Bay has, beside many all-inclusive hotels, a few popular shopping districts. Preferred shopping centers include the City Centre, Holiday Village Shopping Centre, and The Half Moon Shopping Village. In addition, the shops around the airport provide a wide selection of tourist goods.
The name Montego has an interesting history. This word comes from the Spanish word "manteca" which means lard. Montego Bay was once a busy port from where the Spanish would ship the hogs they butchered in the mountains.
Montego Bay, Jamaica, is a favorite place for all-inclusive vacations because it has, beside exquisite beach resorts dotted with hotels, many tourist attractions, including a number of plantation tours. The Bob Marley experience is a "must" attraction, featuring a documentary film about the legendary reggae artist and a huge memorabilia shop.
For vacationers which like more adventure a funny way to spend the time are the rafting tours. These tours feature rafting down on a peaceful river sitting on a bamboo raft. Many fishing charters are also available here, so fishing is a common activity. The waters around Jamaica are filled with marlin, tuna, and kingfish. For other tourists, cycling, golf, horseback riding, snorkeling, and scuba diving are fantastic activities there.
